“I Will Leave” — Moyes Confirms Everton Exit If Ownership Changes

LIVERPOOL, UK  – David Moyes has confirmed he will leave Everton at the end of this season should The Friedkin Group sell the club, in a frank press conference that laid bare his shock at Friday’s announcement that the club is up for sale . The manager revealed he found out the news at the exact same time as supporters — when the official statement dropped on Friday morning.

Blindsided By The News

Speaking to reporters ahead of Sunday’s trip to Hull City, Moyes admitted his astonishment:

“Yeah I was surprised, they’d only came in a year and a half ago. Most owners come in for a lot longer than that. We were all expecting them to be here for 20 to 30 years. But maybe the way things worked out over the transfer window, I probably had seen through it a little bit before that. It’s probably all there for Evertonians to see now.”

The Friedkin Group only completed their full takeover in December 2024, ending Farhad Moshiri’s long tenure at Goodison Park . In a statement, TFG said they are open to “new investment options for Everton Football Club, including the potential sale of a controlling interest,” and would only deal with parties they believe will be the “right stewards” for the club .

A Summer Of Disconnect

Moyes indicated that signs of the owners’ wavering commitment emerged during a difficult summer transfer window — a window that saw the club accept a bid for prized youngster Harrison Armstrong before pulling out, then sell striker Beto, leaving the squad dangerously short up front . It also emerged in September that Moyes had never met or spoken to chairman Dan Friedkin since returning to the club in January 2025 .

“I truly believed that with new ownership who were in for it completely with us all, my ambition coming back was to get Everton back to the levels they’d been at in the past — challenging for Europe more often,” Moyes said. “But it’s for Evertonians that I am more disappointed. They have been through so many difficult periods and the last thing they really wanted to hear was this.”

Clear Position On His Future

When asked directly about his position under new owners, Moyes was unequivocal:

“I came here to do a job, and I’ll see it through until the end of the season. But if there’s a new owner, a new vision, a new direction — then it’s only right they bring in their own person. I will leave at the end of the season.”

For Everton fans, another period of uncertainty has arrived. And this time, the manager they welcomed back may be walking out the door with them.

Whatever happens — thank you, David. Once an Evertonian, always an Evertonian. 💙
