“My Father Influenced My Decision”: Traoré Picks Hearts Over Spurs Despite Higher Offer
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — Talented Ivorian midfielder Bénie Traoré has revealed how the advice of his father was the decisive factor in choosing Heart of Midlothian over Tottenham Hotspur, even though the Premier League side offered significantly higher wages. The 22‑year‑old creative playmaker is set to join from New York City FC, with Hearts having now secured full clearance to finalise his signature.
Speaking publicly for the first time since agreeing personal terms, Traoré explained: “My father always told me that the right club is not always the one that pays the most — it is the one where you feel valued, where you can grow as a player and as a person, and where you find a connection that goes beyond the pitch. He spoke to me about the passion of the Hearts fans, about the history of this club, and about the ambition they have to climb higher. Those words stayed with me every step of the way.”
Tottenham’s interest was concrete and financially far more lucrative, but Traoré never wavered once he learned more about the Tynecastle project. “It was a big decision, and of course the money matters in football — but I want to play where I am wanted, where I have a clear role, and where I can build something special. Everything I heard about Hearts matched exactly what my father had taught me to look for.”
Hearts have moved swiftly to secure one of the most sought‑after talents in Major League Soccer, known for his sharp passing, intelligent movement and ability to unlock tight defences. Sporting director Joe Savage welcomed the capture: “Bénie is exactly the kind of player we want to bring here — talented, hungry and determined to make his mark. We are honoured that he and his family have placed their trust in us ahead of clubs with bigger resources.”
Traoré added: “I cannot wait to run out at Tynecastle and meet the supporters my father spoke so highly of. This is the start of a new chapter, and I am ready to give everything to help this club achieve its goals.”
