“I Chose Sheffield Wednesday For These Three Reasons”: Giroud Explains One‑Year Deal

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND  — Olivier Giroud has officially confirmed his surprise one‑year agreement with Sheffield Wednesday, and laid out exactly why the Hillsborough project won him over ahead of other options. The legendary French striker, winner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and France’s record marksman with 57 international goals, has signed a short‑term contract that brings one of the most decorated players of his generation to the Owls.

Giroud built his legacy at Arsenal and Chelsea, scoring more than 140 combined goals while lifting multiple major trophies — including three FA Cups, the Europa League, and the UEFA Champions League. Now, as he enters this new chapter, he revealed three key reasons for his decision:

First: The club’s ambition and connection with the fans. “I felt something special the moment I spoke to everyone here,” Giroud said. “Sheffield Wednesday is a club with huge history and incredible support. I want to be part of pushing this team forward and giving these fans moments they can be proud of.”

Second: The chance to lead and inspire. “I know what it takes to win at the highest level,” he explained. “I am here to help this squad, to share my experience, and to lead by example every single day. This is not just about playing — it is about helping young players grow and adding to the fight for promotion.”

Third: A personal desire to write a new story. “I have achieved so much in my career, but I still have hunger in my heart,” he added. “Coming here feels like the perfect challenge. I want to perform, I want to score goals, and I want to help this club reach where it belongs.”

Sheffield Wednesday officials hailed the capture as a historic moment: “To bring a player of Olivier’s calibre, character and winning mentality is a massive statement. He chose us — and we will give him everything he needs to succeed here.”

Giroud, who will be unveiled officially early next week, said: “I cannot wait to walk out at Hillsborough. I am ready to give my all for this shirt and this club.”
