REAPORT: The Browns are looking to an ex-Bills assistant to take over as offensive coordinator.
The Browns have chosen a former quarterback for the team to be their new offensive coordinator after splitting ways with Alex Van Pelt almost a week and a half ago.
On Sunday, the Browns provided an answer to the first significant query of the offseason.
numerous sources state that Cleveland has appointed former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey as its new offensive coordinator, 11 days after firing offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and numerous other offensive assistants. Having been Buffalo’s signal caller for the previous two seasons, Dorsey was let go during the season when the club finished the season at 5-5.
Having played quarterback with the Browns for three seasons, from 2006 to 2008, Dorsey is no stranger to Cleveland. In those three games that he started, he completed 43-92 for 370 yards and seven picks. When wearing a Browns jersey, he never threw a touchdown.
2011 saw Dorsey’s retirement from football, but not before he was given the chance to return to the NFL as a Pro Scout, joining Ron Rivera’s staff as the Carolina Panthers’ first-year head coach. In 2013, he became a quarterback coach and was moved into a coaching position. Dorsey collaborated extensively with 2015 league MVP Cam Newton for the following five seasons. Carolina went to the Super Bowl in that same year.
Despite taking a brief break from the NFL, the University of Miami product returned to Florida in 2018 to work as an associate athletic director at FIU. After a year, he became the quarterbacks coach on Sean McDermott’s staff. He expanded his job to include pass game coordinator in
Dorsey served in that capacity until Week 10 of the previous year, but following Buffalo’s four-game losing streak in the midst of the season, McDermott decided to take a new approach. In 2023, Dorsey’s offense had several noteworthy results, finishing third in red zone efficiency, third in DVOA, third in EPA/Play, fourth in QBR, third in yards per play, and second in third down conversion rate.
But because it frequently depended only on elite wide receiver Stefon Diggs and quarterback Josh Allen to move the ball successfully, the offense was critiqued for lacking inventiveness. Following Dorsey’s exit, Buffalo’s run game saw a significant surge in output, and the Bills finished the season with six straight victories and the AFC North title.
