🔙 “I Don’t Know If The New Owners Will Want Me” — Moyes To Leave Everton At Season’s End

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND  — David Moyes has officially confirmed he will leave Everton at the end of the current season, with incoming Chief Executive Officer Marge taking the helm alongside the club’s changing ownership landscape. The announcement comes as The Friedkin Group (TFG) confirmed earlier this month that it is actively exploring the sale of a controlling interest in the club, casting uncertainty over the long-term future of the current management team.

🗣️ Three Key Reasons For His Decision

Speaking candidly about why he chose to announce his departure before his contract expires, Moyes outlined three central factors:

“First — the changing guard. With a new CEO coming in and potentially new owners on the horizon, I don’t know whether the people taking charge will want me here. It’s only fair they have a clean slate to build what they believe is best for the club.”

“Second — clarity for the team. The players deserve certainty, not speculation hanging over them for months. By confirming this now, everyone knows where we stand. We can focus fully on the pitch without distraction.”

“Third — respect for the process. It wouldn’t be right for me to stay if the vision moving forward isn’t mine. I’ve always believed the manager should be aligned with the owners. If that alignment isn’t there, it’s time to step aside.”

Ownership Uncertainty The Deciding Factor

Moyes admitted he simply cannot guarantee what the new owners will want — and that made committing to a new deal impossible. The Friedkin Group’s decision to explore a sale, announced in October 2026, means the club is entering a critical transitional phase.

“I’ve given my heart and soul to this club,” Moyes said emotionally. “But Everton is bigger than any one man. If the new stewards want a different direction, that’s their prerogative. My job between now and May is to give everything I’ve got for the fans who have stood by me.”

Supporters have praised his honesty and dignity in handling the news. The season remains the priority — but come May, Goodison Park will say goodbye to one of its most familiar faces. 💙⚽
