“I CHOSE HEARTS OVER MONEY” — Benzema Takes Pay Cut To Sign For Hearts
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – It is the signing that defies belief and redefines ambition: Karim Benzema, the Ballon d’Or winner and one of the greatest strikers in football history, is on the verge of joining Heart of Midlothian — and he has revealed he rejected far richer offers from Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, accepting a salary of less than €2 million per season to make it happen. The French legend becomes a free agent after ending his contract with Al Hilal, with final details now being completed.
The Choice: Ambition Over Riches
Benzema explained his decision in his own words:
“There is one thing I will do at Heart FC — I will help this club reach the heights it deserves. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe offered me much more money — huge sums that would have been easy to accept. But money is not everything. I have won it all elsewhere; now I want to build something special here. I reduced my salary to under €2 million because I believe in this project. I want to make Hearts feared again, in Scotland and across Europe.”

Sporting Director Hails “The Signing Of A Lifetime”
Hearts’ Sporting Director Graeme Jones led the pursuit and paid tribute to Benzema’s decision:
“This is beyond our wildest dreams. To attract a player of Karim’s calibre is extraordinary — but to do so because he believes in our future and is willing to take less to be part of it? That is priceless. He could have gone anywhere. He chose us. That speaks volumes about this club’s potential. He brings standards, experience and a winning mentality that will lift everyone around him.”
