Sheffield Wednesday Earn Nods For Impressive Early-Season Turnaround

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND  – Sheffield Wednesday’s promising start back in League One has earned high-level recognition, with manager Henrik Pedersen and striker Jamal Lowe both shortlisted for the EFL’s August Manager and Player of the Month awards. The club enjoyed a strong opening stretch, collecting two wins from three August fixtures in a campaign widely viewed as a fresh start following last term’s troubles.

The Owls’ form featured an opening-day victory over Leyton Orient, a narrow loss to Bradford City, and a statement 7-2 rout of Bromley. This run formed the basis of their nomination. Pedersen’s candidacy highlights his “steadying presence” during last season’s crisis-hit relegation battle and his pivotal role in “turning around a losing habit” since taking charge. He faces competition from Martin Drury (Huddersfield Town), Ian Evatt (Blackpool), and Jim McNulty (Stockport County). A win would make him only the fourth Wednesday boss to claim the honour, following Paul Sturrock (2004), Alan Irvine (2010), and Dave Jones (2012).

Lowe, meanwhile, has hit the ground running, notching three goals and two assists across the three games. The in-form forward is up against Matt Pennington (Bradford), Joe Taylor (Huddersfield), and former Wednesday goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell (now Blackpool). If successful, he would become the eighth player in club history to win the monthly award—joining an illustrious list including Giles Coke, Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, and academy coach Lee Gregory.

Winners are chosen by a panel consisting of EFL CEO Trevor Birch, pundit Don Goodman, and Sky Bet’s Ivor Davies. Official results are set to be announced Friday morning, with the entire club and fanbase eagerly awaiting confirmation of what would be further reward for their impressive upturn.
