The Real Salt Lake Secure Promising Canadian Defender Luc de Fougerolles on Loan From Fulham — The Defender Promised…
Real Salt Lake has pulled off a major defensive coup, confirming Saturday the signing of highly-rated Canadian international center-back Luc de Fougerolles on loan from English Premier League side Fulham FC.
The 20-year-old talent is on loan through the rest of the 2026 MLS season, with an option to extend into the 2027 MLS Sprint Season — and he’s ready to deliver immediate, full impact as the club chases postseason success.
De Fougerolles arrives in peak form, fresh from a standout 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada. He started and played every minute of all five matches, helping his nation make history by reaching the Round of 16 — their best finish in the modern era. His composure, tactical intelligence, and physical strength against top global competition have cemented his status as one of CONCACAF’s brightest young defensive stars.
“I’m fully committed to bringing my best to every training session and match,” de Fougerolles said of his new role. “I want to contribute right away, help solidify our back line, and give everything I have to help Real Salt Lake achieve its goals this season.”
Club leadership shares that confidence. “The arrival of Luc for the final stretch of 2026 will significantly strengthen our defensive options,” noted Kurt Schmid, Real Salt Lake’s Chief Soccer Officer. “His recent World Cup experience, plus years of high-level development at Fulham, make him primed to make an immediate impact as we push deep into the playoffs.”
His career path reflects strong preparation: a graduate of Fulham’s elite academy with two senior-team appearances, he spent last season on loan at Belgian top-flight club FCV Dender EH, earning 30 starts and sharpening consistency across a full campaign. Internationally, he already holds 18 senior caps for Canada — regularly in the starting lineup under head coach Jesse Marsch — proving he thrives in high-stakes environments.
De Fougerolles’ style — calm under pressure, strong in the air, and capable of building play from the back — fits perfectly with Real Salt Lake’s system. His arrival adds critical depth and playoff-proven quality as the team enters the most intense phase of the season. With his drive and pedigree, he could become the defensive cornerstone that defines their campaign.
