VALE IAN MARTIN: Manly Mourns Four-Time Premiership Legend, Aged 75
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles family and wider rugby league community are united in sorrow following the passing of club icon Ian Martin, a four-time premiership winner and cornerstone of the club’s golden era. He was 75 years old.

A proud local junior from Narraweena, Martin’s career spanned a decade of dominance at Brookvale Oval, appearing in 159 first-grade games between 1969 and 1978. Renowned for his toughness, uncompromising defence, and high work ethic, he carved his legacy initially as a gifted five-eighth before seamlessly transitioning into a formidable lock forward.
Martin’s trophy haul places him among the Sea Eagles’ most decorated players:
🏆 1972, 1973, 1976 Premierships
🏆 1978 Premiership: Sealed in the historic 16–0 Grand Final replay victory over Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks
📅 Six Grand Finals: A rare feat, including the 1970 loss to South Sydney and the drawn 1978 decider
🌟 Win Rate: Posted an exceptional 72% success rate across his first-grade tenure
Beyond club success, Martin earned representative honours:
– New South Wales (1972)
– NSW Country (1975) — notably starring in the last Country Firsts side to defeat City.
His lifelong dedication was formally recognised in 2014, when he was awarded Life Membership (Player #197), the highest tribute a club can bestow. Affectionately nicknamed “IMA,” he remained a beloved figure within the Northern Beaches community long after hanging up his boots.
Tributes have poured in from teammates, fans, and rivals:
“Such an underrated player… the best teammate and role model,” recalled one fan. “He was always the first to welcome young players.”
“Torrid style, unbreakable spirit,” added another. “One of the toughest to ever wear the jersey.”
The club statement reads: “Thank you for the memories, Ian. You will always be a Manly legend.” Deepest condolences are extended to his wife Julie, children Rebecca and Ben, and all loved ones.
Martin’s legacy of grit, loyalty, and excellence will forever fly high alongside the Sea Eagles.
