Plymouth Argyle’s Matthew Sorinola shares heartfelt tribute following loss of beloved aunt
Home Park, 4 July 2026 – Plymouth Argyle fans and teammates have united in support of versatile wing‑back Matthew Sorinola, who announced today the sad passing of his beloved aunt. In an emotional message shared with the club and supporters, he paid tribute to the woman who was a constant source of strength and encouragement throughout his life and football career.
Sorinola joined the Pilgrims on a free transfer in January 2024, and quickly became a reliable fixture across both defensive and attacking roles down the flanks. He was a key part of the side that secured promotion from League One, featuring 36 times and scoring one vital goal during that successful campaign, before going on to make 25 appearances in the Championship as Argyle established themselves at the higher level.
“From my earliest kickabouts to running out at Home Park, she was always there,” Sorinola said. “She taught me resilience, humility and to give everything no matter the odds. Every time I pull on the green shirt, I carry her belief with me. I will miss her more than words can say.”
Club officials and staff expressed their deepest sympathies, describing Sorinola as a dedicated professional who has grown into a hugely popular member of the squad. “Matthew has been a consistent, committed presence for us since he arrived,” a spokesperson commented. “We hold him and his family in our thoughts entirely at this difficult time, and we will give him all the space and support he needs.”
Teammates, coaching staff and Argyle supporters have flooded social media and club channels with messages of condolence, recalling seeing his aunt cheering loudly in the Home Park stands. Sorinola will step back from pre‑season training temporarily to spend time with his family, and says he will return “ready to play for her, and to make her proud in every match ahead”.
