Everton prospect Aled Thomas pays tribute after loss of beloved aunt
Finch Farm / Goodison Park, – Promising Everton defender Aled Thomas has announced today the sad passing of his beloved aunt, sharing an emotional tribute to the relative who supported him from his earliest days in football through every milestone at the club.
The 19‑year‑old Welshman came through Everton’s youth system from the age of seven, earning his first professional contract in recognition of his rapid progress. A key moment in his academy journey came when he captained the Under‑18 side in a friendly at the club’s main stadium – a memory he says she was “so incredibly proud” to witness. He has since become a regular for the Under‑21 squad, catching eyes with his composure, versatility and consistent performances in Premier League 2 and cup competitions.
“From my very first training sessions in Wales to walking out here as captain, my aunt was always there,” Thomas said. “She drove for hours in all weathers, kept me grounded when things went well, and lifted me up when they didn’t. Every shirt I wear, every step forward I take – it means as much to her as it does to me. I will carry her belief with me onto the pitch always.”
Everton’s academy management and coaching staff have offered their full support. “Aled is a wonderful young man and a fine prospect for our future,” an academy spokesperson stated. “We are deeply saddened by his loss and will ensure he has all the time, space and care he needs to be with his family right now.”
Teammates, academy peers and Everton supporters have rallied with messages of condolence across social media, recalling her passionate backing from the stands. Thomas will take time away from pre‑season training to be close to his family, adding: “When I return, I will play harder and braver than ever – to do her proud.”
