LET’S GO!!! OFFICIAL: SYDNEY ROOSTERS SIGN PROMISING YOUNG TALENT PHILLIP COATES
SYDNEY – The Sydney Roosters have seized a golden opportunity to secure the signature of rising rugby league star Phillip (Phil) Coates, with the club confirming the deal in an official announcement that has sent waves of excitement through the Tricolours faithful.
The 20-year-old outside back arrives at Bondi Junction from the Brisbane Broncos, where he has built a reputation as one of the game’s most promising young prospects. Standing at 196cm and weighing 100kg, Coates combines a powerful, athletic frame with exceptional speed and standout aerial ability – attributes that have already drawn comparisons to his older brother, NRL star Xavier Coates.
Having progressed through the Broncos’ junior pathways system, Phil Coates established himself as a key player in their feeder club setup in early 2026, consistently impressing with his strong carries, reliable defensive reads, and knack for contesting high balls. His performances caught the attention of multiple NRL clubs, but the Roosters moved swiftly to secure his services after identifying him as a perfect fit for their long-term playing strategy.
Sydney Roosters recruitment manager expressed delight at the signing, stating: “We’ve been monitoring Phil’s development closely for some time now, and when the opportunity arose to bring him to the club, we didn’t hesitate. His physical attributes are remarkable, but more importantly, he possesses the work ethic and determination we look for in all our players. With the guidance of our coaching staff and the support of our experienced squad, we believe he has the potential to become a major force in the NRL.”
Phil Coates shared his enthusiasm about joining the foundation club: “It’s a dream come true to sign with the Sydney Roosters. This is a club with a rich history and a track record of developing top-tier talent. I know there’s a lot of work ahead of me, but I’m ready to put in the effort and learn from some of the best in the game. I want to thank the Broncos for everything they’ve done for me, and now I’m focused on making the most of this opportunity with the Roosters – let’s go!”
The deal, which includes a two-year contract with an option for a third season, is seen as a significant coup for the Roosters as they look to strengthen their outside backs department and build for sustained success in the coming years.
