LET GO!! IT’S NOW OFFICIAL: SUNDERLAND HIJACK EVERTON TARGET TO SIGN ESLI GARCIA ON PRE-CONTRACT
Sunderland AFC have pulled off a major transfer coup, confirming they have agreed a pre-contract deal with highly-rated Goiás Esporte Clube forward Esli Garcia – a player long targeted by Everton.
The 20-year-old Brazilian will join the Black Cats in the summer when his current contract with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A side expires, bringing an end to months of transfer speculation. Everton had been linked with Garcia since he made his senior breakthrough in 2025, but Sunderland moved decisively to secure the young striker’s signature ahead of their Premier League rivals.
Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has hailed Garcia’s decision to choose the Stadium of Light over Goodison Park, describing it as a powerful statement of the club’s ambition and ability to nurture emerging talent.
“Esli’s choice to come to Sunderland instead of Everton is a testament to the exciting project we are building here in the North East,” said Le Bris. “We have created an environment where young players can flourish – our track record of developing talent through to the first team speaks for itself, and Esli has recognised that this is the perfect place for him to grow as a footballer.
“He is a player with immense potential. Despite his youth, he shows remarkable composure in front of goal and possesses the pace and technical quality to unlock even the most organised defences. We have been monitoring his progress closely, and his performances for Goiás – even in limited game time – have convinced us he can make a significant impact in English football.”
During the 2025 season with Goiás, Garcia made 11 appearances, accumulating 242 minutes on the pitch and scoring one well-taken goal that showcased his clinical finishing. His versatility to operate across the forward line – as a central striker or wide attacker – has added to his appeal, with scouts noting his intelligent movement and willingness to press from the front.
Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Our recruitment team has done exceptional work to secure this deal. We have built strong relationships in Brazilian football, which allowed us to act quickly when the opportunity presented itself. The agreement includes a structured sell-on clause with Goiás, and we are delighted to welcome Esli to Sunderland as we continue to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.”
The specific terms of Garcia’s contract remain confidential, though it is understood to include performance-based incentives tied to appearances, goals.
