SCARLETT RETURNS TO GMHBA STADIUM WITH “UNFINISHED BUSINESS” – TAKES ON TWO COACHING ROLES FOR 2026

Geelong Cats legend Matthew Scarlett is back at GMHBA Stadium – and this time, he’s not just making a single appearance. The AFL great, who describes Geelong as “my second home”, has returned to take on dual coaching responsibilities for the 2026 season, declaring he has “unfinished business” with the club he helped build into a powerhouse.

Scarlett will serve as a part-time Specialist Coach with the senior team, while also leading the club’s Under 16 program. The move marks his second coaching stint at Kardinia Park, following a successful five-year run as assistant coach from 2016 to 2021, where he oversaw one of the competition’s most dominant defensive units and nurtured a new generation of talent.

“Geelong is more than just a club to me – it’s my second home, and I’ve always felt there was unfinished business here,” Scarlett said. “After stepping away a few years ago, I’ve taken time to reflect on how I can best contribute to the Cats’ future, and working with both our senior players and the next wave of talent feels like the perfect fit.”

A true icon of the game, Scarlett played 284 games for the Cats between 1998 and 2012, forming the backbone of the club’s defence during their golden era. He was central to Geelong’s 2007, 2009, and 2011 premiership triumphs, revolutionizing the fullback position with his attacking style and exceptional skill. His accolades include six All-Australian selections, the 2003 Carji Greeves Medal as the club’s best and fairest, and induction as a Hall of Fame Legend in 2015 – cementing his status as one of the greatest defenders in AFL history.

Geelong Cats CEO Steve Hocking welcomed Scarlett’s return, noting his unique ability to connect with players across all age groups. “Matthew brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of what it means to be a Geelong Cat,” Hocking said. “His dual role will ensure our senior squad benefits from his expertise while helping us develop the stars of tomorrow.”
