Good Signing: Newcastle Knights Secure Scott Drinkwater on Three-Year Deal
Newcastle Knights have finally agreed terms with North Queensland Cowboys star Scott Drinkwater, who has officially signed a pre-contract to join the club on a three-year deal running until the end of the 2029 NRL season. The move marks a significant recruitment coup for the Knights as they strengthen their backline options ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Negotiations between the two clubs have concluded successfully, with the Knights securing the services of one of the NRL’s most consistent playmakers. While the exact transfer details remain undisclosed, sources confirm the deal includes provisions for performance-based incentives and a conditional release clause should specific milestones be met. Drinkwater will complete his final commitments with the Cowboys before joining Newcastle for pre-season preparations later this year.
The 27-year-old has established himself as a standout performer for North Queensland since joining the club in 2020, earning the prestigious Paul Bowman Medal for Player of the Year in 2023 – the highest individual honour at the Cowboys. His achievements also include being named NRL Nines Player of the Tournament in his debut season with the club, where he showcased his dynamic skill set and game management abilities.
As a versatile back capable of playing fullback, five-eighth and halfback, Drinkwater has been a prolific contributor in attack. He averaged over 150 running metres per game across his standout 2022 and 2023 seasons, while also registering 32 tries and 45 try assists in 89 appearances for the Cowboys. His ability to break defensive lines and create scoring opportunities for teammates has made him one of the most sought-after playmakers in the competition.
Drinkwater expressed his excitement about the move to Newcastle, stating: “The Knights have a clear vision for success and a passionate fan base that makes this an incredible opportunity for me. I’ve loved every moment at the Cowboys and will always be grateful for what the club has given me, but I’m ready for a new challenge and can’t wait to pull on the red and blue jersey.”
Newcastle Knights head coach commented on the signing, saying: “Scott is a proven match-winner at NRL level who brings experience, skill and leadership to our squad. His versatility and ability to control the game will be invaluable as we build towards competing for premierships. We’ve been tracking his progress for some time and are thrilled to have him join our Knights family.”
The acquisition of Drinkwater follows the Knights’ recent recruitment drive, as the club looks to build on their top-eight finish last season.
