Good Signing: Sydney Roosters Secure Scott Drinkwater on Three-Year Deal
Sydney Roosters have finalised a pre-contract agreement with North Queensland Cowboys star Scott Drinkwater, who will join the Tricolours on a three-year deal commencing in 2027, running until the end of the 2029 NRL season. The high-profile signing strengthens the Roosters’ backline stocks as they aim to build on their recent finals appearance.
After extensive negotiations, both clubs have reached a mutual agreement on the transfer, with details of the deal remaining confidential at the request of all parties. However, it is understood the contract includes performance-based bonuses tied to team success and individual milestones, along with a limited sell-on clause for the Cowboys. Drinkwater will honour his remaining commitments with North Queensland before relocating to Sydney ahead of next season’s pre-season training.
The 27-year-old has been a standout performer for the Cowboys since arriving in 2020, cementing his reputation as one of the NRL’s most dynamic playmakers. His accolades include winning the prestigious Paul Bowman Medal for North Queensland’s Player of the Year in 2023 – the club’s highest individual honour. He first made his mark on the competition by being named NRL Nines Player of the Tournament in his debut season with the Cowboys, showcasing his exceptional speed, vision and game management skills.
A versatile back capable of excelling at fullback, five-eighth or halfback, Drinkwater has been a consistent force in attack. Across his standout 2022 and 2023 campaigns, he averaged over 150 running metres per game, while contributing 32 tries and 45 try assists in 89 appearances for North Queensland. His ability to break defensive lines, create scoring opportunities and control the tempo of matches has made him one of the most sought-after talents in the league.
Drinkwater spoke enthusiastically about the move to the Roosters, saying: “The Sydney Roosters have a rich history of success and are one of the biggest clubs in the NRL – this is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’ll always be grateful to the Cowboys for everything they’ve done for me, but I’m excited to take on this new challenge and help bring more silverware to the Eastern Suburbs.”
Sydney Roosters head coach commented on the signing: “Scott is a proven match-winner at the highest level who brings exactly the kind of skill, experience and leadership we need. His versatility gives us real flexibility in our spine, and we believe he’ll thrive in our system. We’ve tracked his progress closely and are delighted to welcome him to the Roosters family.”
The acquisition of Drinkwater is the Roosters’ key signing of the off-season, as the club looks to build on their 2025 preliminary final finish.
