“We Will Not Back Down”: Vrancken Defiant Ahead Of League Cup Clash

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND –  Wouter Vrancken has issued a defiant message to his Heart of Midlothian squad: “We will not back down.” The new head coach was speaking ahead of Sunday’s League Cup last‑16 tie against Inverness Caledonian Thistle, fresh off securing his first win in charge and finding his feet after a difficult start to life at Tynecastle.

It has been a testing opening for the Belgian. His first three competitive matches in charge brought mixed fortunes: a humbling 6–1 defeat in the Europa League qualifier first leg against Benfica, followed by a resounding 4–0 Scottish Premiership victory over Dundee United, and a creditable draw in the European return leg. Now, as they host Championship side Inverness — at the same stage where they exited the competition last season — Vrancken is determined to show progress.

Asked whether he would rotate his starting XI, he made his philosophy clear: “You have to deserve an opportunity to play. You have to show it in every minute you play, and in every training session. But we also have to assess the minor injuries — Laurent Mendy and Harry Milne are doubts. Can they feature? Who is available? Regardless, we will not back down. We have to push forward. It does not matter who we face — whether it’s Benfica on Thursday or Inverness on Sunday — we must show the same effort, the same mentality, the same team spirit. That is the most important thing to me.”

In further news, Vrancken has moved to bolster his goalkeeping options, signing experienced shot‑stopper Kieran Wright on a short‑term contract until January. The 27‑year‑old spent over a decade at Rangers without making a first‑team appearance, instead gaining valuable experience across ten different loan spells — most recently with Airdrieonians in the Championship. Wright also had spells at Livingston, Kilmarnock, Dumbarton, Alloa, Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers, bringing depth and reliability to the goalkeeping ranks.

Hearts now have four senior keepers on the books. New summer signing Beau Reus has stepped up as first choice following the departure of Alexander Schwolow, with Ryan Fulton and Zander Clark providing backup — though Clark has been omitted from recent matchday squads. Youngsters Liam McFarlane and Harry Stone are currently away on loan at Partick Thistle and Ayr United respectively.

As Sunday’s cup tie approaches, the message from the dugout is unmistakeable: standards will not drop, and Hearts will not retreat.
