NRL Blockbuster: Dane Gagai Joins Penrith Panthers on Three-Year Deal
The NRL landscape has been sent into a spin with confirmation that Newcastle Knights legend Dane Gagai has signed a three-year deal with reigning powerhouse Penrith Panthers, in a move described as one of the most significant signings of the off-season.
The 34-year-old centre, who has cemented his status as one of the competition’s most respected figures, brings a wealth of experience and proven quality to the Panthers’ ranks. Gagai departs the Knights as a club icon, having won the Danny Buderus Medal (Player of the Year) twice (2016 and 2024), earned Life Membership in 2023, and swept all major club honours – Player of the Year, Gladiator of the Year, and Players’ Player – in a dominant 2024 campaign. He played over 150 games for Newcastle and reached the prestigious 300-game NRL milestone in 2025, establishing himself as a leader both on and off the field through his tenacious style and positive influence in the dressing room.
A Queensland Origin and Australian representative, Gagai was also awarded the 2017 Wally Lewis Medal as State of Origin’s best player, adding big-game pedigree to a Panthers side that has claimed six premierships and five minor premierships in its history. Penrith coach Ivan Cleary said the signing was a strategic coup for the club.
“Dane brings experience, versatility, and a winning mindset that aligns perfectly with our culture,” Cleary stated. “His ability to play across multiple backline positions – centre, wing, and fullback – gives us valuable flexibility, while his leadership will be instrumental in mentoring our younger players as we build for the future.”
Sources close to the club confirm the deal was structured within the NRL’s salary cap framework, with Penrith targeting Gagai not only for his on-field talent but also his professionalism and ability to thrive under pressure. For Gagai, the move represents a fresh challenge at a club synonymous with sustained success.
“I’m excited to join a team that sets the standard in the NRL,” Gagai said. “The Panthers have built something special here, and I’m ready to contribute to their next chapter while chasing more silverware.”
Fans have reacted with a mix of sadness at his departure from Newcastle and excitement at the prospect of seeing him in Penrith’s black, teal, and gold. As preseason preparations ramp up, all eyes will be on how Gagai integrates into the Panthers’ system ahead of the 2026 season.
