BREAKING NEWS: SYDNEY ROOSTERS WELCOME BACK LEGENDARY ANTHONY MINICHIELLO IN SENIOR ROLE

The Sydney Roosters have today confirmed the sensational return of former vice-captain and premiership-winning playmaker Anthony Minichiello, marking a triumphant homecoming as he takes up a senior position as pathways mentor and assistant director of football operations at the Bondi Junction headquarters.

Minichiello, a true one-club legend who spent his entire professional career in the tricolours, will bring decades of elite rugby league experience to the role, supporting both the NRL squad and emerging talent within the club’s development system. The appointment comes as the Roosters look to build on their 2025 finals campaign and strengthen their pipeline of future stars.

“To come back to the club that gave me everything is an incredible honour,” Minichiello said in a statement released this morning. “Wearing the Sydney Roosters jersey was the greatest privilege of my playing career, and now I’m determined to help the next generation of players achieve their full potential while contributing to the club’s ongoing success.”

During his illustrious 15-year career with the Roosters, Minichiello etched his name into rugby league history. He secured two NRL Premierships (2002 and 2013), captained the side to their 2013 title, and set a club-record 302 games – a mark that still stands today. As the all-time leading try-scorer with 139 tries, he was a dominant force on the field, featuring in six Grand Finals and earning representative honours for both New South Wales in the State of Origin and the Australian Kangaroos. His individual accolades include the 2004 Dally M Fullback of the Year and the 2005 Golden Boot Award, recognizing him as the world’s best player.

Roosters CEO Joe Kelly hailed the appointment as a milestone moment for the club. “Anthony embodies everything the Sydney Roosters stand for – excellence, loyalty, and dedication,” Kelly stated. “His knowledge of the game, understanding of our club culture, and ability to connect with players make him the perfect fit for this role. We’re thrilled to have him back in the Roosters family.”

In his new capacity, Minichiello will work closely with head coach Trent Robinson to develop playing strategies, mentor key position players, and oversee the transition of junior talent from the club’s under-21 and reserve grade squads to the NRL level. He will also collaborate with the football department to enhance player welfare and development programs.

The announcement has been met with widespread excitement from fans and former teammates alike, with many taking to social media to celebrate the return of one of the club’s most beloved figures. Minichiello will officially commence his role on 1 February, ahead of the 2026 NRL season launch.
