BREAKING NEWS: Sydney Roosters NRL fans react in shock as star Angus Crichton files for divorce, reveals plans to prioritise career and wellbeing

Sydney Roosters and New South Wales Blues second-row forward Angus Crichton has officially filed for divorce from his wife Chloe Esegbona, sending ripples of shock through the National Rugby League (NRL) community. In a personal statement released earlier today, the 29-year-old opened up about the difficult decision and outlined his intention to focus on his professional career and ongoing mental health management.

Crichton, one of the NRL’s most decorated forwards, stated that the split was amicable and driven by “irreconcilable differences in life priorities”. He emphasized that Esegbona would always hold a special place in his life and requested privacy for both families during the transition. “This was not a choice we made lightly, but we have mutually agreed that going our separate ways is the best path forward for us as individuals,” he said.

The news has left Roosters fans reeling, with many taking to social media to express support for the player they have cheered on through countless victories. Crichton’s contributions to the club are undeniable: he was part of the 2019 NRL Premiership-winning side, lifted the 2020 World Club Challenge trophy, earned a spot in the 2021 Rugby League Annual Team of the Year, and claimed multiple RLPA Player of the Month awards in 2024 as he enjoyed a career-resurgent season. He also starred for the NSW Blues, winning four State of Origin series and being named the 2024 series’ best player, while representing Australia at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.

In his statement, Crichton revealed his decision to channel his energy into football and his wellbeing. Having previously taken an indefinite break from the game in 2023 to seek treatment for bipolar disorder, he noted that prioritising his health and performance would be central to his next chapter. He also confirmed he remains in discussions with the Roosters about his future, as his contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, and has not ruled out a potential code switch to rugby union overseas.

The Sydney Roosters released a statement offering full support to Crichton, describing him as a “valued member of our family” and vowing to stand by him through this personal challenge. The club added that preparations for the 2026 NRL season remain on track, with Crichton expected to resume training with the squad later this month.
