Roosters dealt major blow as Watson sidelined for 2026 pre-season

The Sydney Roosters have been handed a significant setback ahead of the 2026 NRL season with utility Connor Watson ruled out indefinitely after sustaining a knee injury at training yesterday.

Scans confirmed the 29-year-old suffered a partial tear to his right patella tendon, marking a cruel twist after he battled back from a similar left knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023 campaign. Club medical staff estimate a recovery period of 4–6 months, ruling Watson out of the pre-season and likely the opening rounds of the premiership.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson expressed disappointment, highlighting Watson’s importance to the squad’s flexibility. “Connor’s versatility is unmatched – he can cover five positions and brings immense physicality and work ethic,” Robinson said. “His absence creates a void we’ll need to fill collectively, but we’re focused on supporting his recovery.”

Watson, who returned to the Roosters in 2022 after a four-year spell at Newcastle, has been a linchpin in the side’s depth. His achievements at Bondi include winning the 2017 NRL Auckland Nines, representing NSW Country and City Origin the same year, and establishing himself as a reliable bench weapon and occasional starter. In 2025, he featured in 17 games, notching four tries, five try assists, and 664 tackles, showcasing his defensive resilience and attacking flair.

The injury comes as the Roosters prepare for a title tilt, with Watson tipped to play a key role in hooker and lock rotations. Robinson indicated the club would explore internal options, including young gun Sam Walker and veteran Jake Friend, while also monitoring the transfer market for short-term cover.

Watson took to social media to share his frustration, vowing to return stronger. “Devastated to start the year this way, but I’ve been here before and know what it takes to come back,” he posted. “Thanks for the support – can’t wait to pull on the jersey again.”

The Roosters face the Brisbane Broncos in their season opener on March 8, with Watson’s absence set to test their depth in the forward pack and spine.
