Parramatta Eels Secure Versatile Star Kelly as Lomax Replacement

Parramatta Eels have bolstered their outside-back stocks for the 2026 NRL season with the signing of experienced centre Brian Kelly on a two-year deal, announced on 5 January. Secured after Gold Coast Titans granted him an early release—despite having one year remaining on his contract—Kelly arrives as the designated replacement for Zac Lomax, who was granted an early release to pursue a switch to rugby union this year.

The Eels identified a critical need for a strike weapon in the outside backs following Lomax’s departure, and Kelly brings a proven track record to fill the void. While the club will miss Lomax’s aerial prowess and goal-kicking, the hard-running centre offers significant attacking value as a prolific offloader, having crossed for 66 tries in 190 NRL appearances across stints with Manly and the Titans. His credentials include representative honours with Country Origin and the Indigenous All Stars, adding big-game experience to the squad.

Eels general manager of football Mark O’Neill highlighted the strategic fit: “We had an opportunity to strengthen our outside backs which was a positional area of need, and Brian certainly fits that need very well for us. Jason and the coaching staff are looking forward to working with Brian who adds a greater attacking dimension to our game. With nearly 200 NRL games to his name, Brian’s experience will be an added benefit to the broader squad.”

Kelly’s arrival coincides with significant left-edge turnover at the Titans, where Kieran Foran retired and Alofiana Khan-Pereira joined the Warriors. While he faces scrutiny over defensive vulnerabilities, his attacking flair and experience are poised to enhance Parramatta’s backline depth as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
