SYDNEY ROOSTERS WELCOME BACK LEGENDARY PLAYMAKER LUKE KEARY
The Sydney Roosters have today confirmed the sensational return of former vice-captain and premiership-winning playmaker Luke Keary, marking a triumphant homecoming for one of the club’s most decorated figures.
Keary, who departed for French Super League side Catalan Dragons in 2025 after initially announcing his NRL retirement, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal to rejoin the tricolours, where he forged his legacy as a pivotal figure in the club’s recent dominance. During his first stint at Bondi Junction from 2017 to 2024, the crafty five-eighth claimed back-to-back NRL Premierships in 2018 and 2019, earning the Clive Churchill Medal as man of the match in the 2018 grand final for a masterful performance alongside halves partner Cooper Cronk.
His leadership was instrumental in guiding the team through a golden era, serving as vice-captain and representing Australia at international level, as well as earning State of Origin selection for New South Wales in 2020. Roosters coach Trent Robinson praised Keary’s return as a significant boost to the squad’s experience and creativity. “Luke’s football IQ and ability to control the game are unmatched,” Robinson said. “His presence in the halves will mentor our younger players and add depth to our attacking structure.”
Keary expressed his excitement at returning to the club that holds a special place in his heart. “Coming back to the Roosters feels like coming home,” he stated. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success once again and work alongside familiar faces.”
The 33-year-old’s return comes at a crucial time for the Roosters, who are aiming to reclaim the NRL title after a disappointing 2025 campaign. With his proven track record and leadership qualities, Keary is poised to play a key role in shaping the team’s fortunes in the upcoming season, linking up with emerging talent Sam Walker in the halves to recreate the potent partnership that flourished before his departure.
