Geelong Cats Secure Nathan Buckley as Midfield Assistant for 2026, Eyeing Tasmania Stepping Stone
Geelong Cats have officially welcomed former Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley as their new midfield assistant coach for the 2026 AFL season, with the appointment announced last month carrying clear implications for his future. The role is widely viewed as a stepping stone toward the vacant head coaching position at incoming expansion team Tasmania, as the Cats bolster their coaching ranks while nurturing emerging leadership talent.
Buckley, who spent four years in media commentary with Fox Footy and SEN following his departure from Collingwood’s senior coaching role in 2021, did not shy away from questions about his desire to return to top-flight coaching. “I’ve never hidden my passion for leading a team,” he stated. “This opportunity at Geelong allows me to refine my craft alongside a successful program, while keeping that senior ambition alive.”
His coaching pedigree is well-established. As an assistant at Collingwood from 2010–2011, Buckley played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence, contributing to the 2010 Premiership under Mick Malthouse and laying the groundwork for his own senior tenure from 2012–2019. During that time, he guided the Magpies to five finals series, including a grand final appearance in 2018.
Geelong’s executive general manager of football, Andrew Mackie, praised the appointment. “Nathan brings a wealth of experience, tactical acumen, and a fresh perspective,” he said. “His ability to develop midfielders and his familiarity with high-pressure environments will be invaluable as we aim to build on our recent success.”
Buckley will work alongside head coach Chris Scott and fellow assistants, focusing on enhancing the Cats’ midfield dynamics. With Tasmania’s entry into the AFL on the horizon, his tenure at Geelong is poised to serve as a critical proving ground for a potential return to senior coaching.
