OFFICIAL: EELS STAR LOMAX TO DEPART IMMEDIATELY, WEIGHS UP RUGBY UNION SWITCH

Parramatta Eels have confirmed the immediate departure of Zac Lomax, with the former NRL star now weighing up a dramatic switch to rugby union as two Super Rugby clubs battle for his signature ahead of a 2027 home World Cup bid.

The 26-year-old has been granted early release from his four-year Eels deal after just one season, setting the stage for a career crossroads he must resolve before the end of 2025. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Western Force and Brumbies are both offering two-year contracts to bring the winger into Super Rugby, with Rugby Australia also in talks over a potential top-up payment that could prove decisive.

Lomax is reportedly willing to take a significant pay cut from his $700,000-a-year NRL salary to chase Wallabies selection. Super Rugby’s maximum base contract stands at $220,000, but top-ups from Rugby Australia – reserved for key Test prospects – would help narrow the gap, alongside potential Test match fees. Lucrative offers from French and Japanese clubs are also on the table, though his focus appears set on the home World Cup.

Despite limited rugby union experience beyond primary school, Lomax is seen as a high-value target for both franchises thanks to his strong aerial skills and goal-kicking ability – attributes that translate seamlessly to the 15-man game. He toured the Force’s facilities in early December as part of his evaluation, with both the Force and Brumbies deep into pre-season training ahead of their round one clash in Perth on Valentine’s Day.

Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh has confirmed the organisation’s interest, while stressing the need for fiscal responsibility. The move would mark a major shift for Lomax, who has represented the Eels, state and country in the NRL, and his decision will be closely monitored as the Wallabies build their squad for the 2027 World Cup cycle.
