LET’S GO: Manly Sea Eagles confirm club legend Anthony Watmough’s return as senior coaching staff for 2026

“LET’S GO” — the iconic Manly Sea Eagles battle cry has been amplified with the club officially announcing former player and legend Anthony Watmough will return as part of the senior coaching staff for the 2026 season, with a formal presentation to fans and media set for 13 January 2026.

The homecoming of one of the most feared backrowers in Sea Eagles history has sent waves of excitement through the Northern Beaches, as Manly looks to inject the same toughness and winning mentality Watmough brought to the field into its coaching ranks ahead of the new NRL campaign.

Watmough’s playing career at Manly was defined by relentless intensity and remarkable success. He was a pivotal figure in two NRL Premiership triumphs in 2008 and 2011 — playing a crucial role in the club’s golden period that saw them establish themselves as a dominant force in the competition. His contributions were rewarded with Manly Life Membership, a fitting honour for a player who gave his all over 278 games in the maroon and white.

His individual brilliance was widely recognised, earning him Dally M Second Rower of the Year awards in 2007 and 2009, along with the Roy Bull Best & Fairest award in 2013. Renowned for his tough, impactful style of play, Watmough combined brute strength with deft skill, regularly breaking through defensive lines and setting up tries for his teammates while inspiring those around him with his never-say-die attitude.

He rightfully earned his status as a Manly club legend, cementing his place among the greatest backrowers to ever pull on the Sea Eagles jersey.

While details of Watmough’s specific role in the senior coaching setup are yet to be unveiled, club officials have confirmed he will play a critical part in shaping the team’s on-field strategy and developing the next generation of Manly players. Fans have already taken to social media to express their enthusiasm, with many hoping his presence will help the Sea Eagles climb back up the ladder and challenge for another premiership in 2026.

The 13 January presentation at 4 Pines Park will give supporters their first chance to welcome Watmough back to the club he served so proudly and hear directly from him about his vision for his new chapter as part of the coaching team.
