KNIGHTS FANS RECEIVE STADIUM RENOVATION UPDATE AS GARDNER CONFIRMS ONGOING WORKS

McDonald Jones Stadium upgrades since 2019 and 2023 continue as venue targets international standard

Newcastle Knights supporters have received official confirmation of McDonald Jones Stadium’s ongoing renovations from CEO Phil Gardner today, as the venue builds on major works completed since 2019 and 2023 to modernize facilities for major events.

Gardner’s update comes amid a busy period for the Knights off the field, providing fans with clarity on the series of upgrades that have transformed the home of Newcastle rugby league. Funded by Venues NSW and the NSW Government, the works are designed to keep the stadium at an international standard for both sports and entertainment.

Key recent renovations include a major LED screen upgrade in 2023, where two new, larger HD screens were installed to enhance the fan experience ahead of the 2024 NRL season. Prior to that, a $1.4 million project in 2019 saw the installation of Evergreen Matrix Instant Play Turf – matching the high-standard playing surface of venues like ANZ Stadium and ensuring optimal conditions for players.

Ongoing refurbishments are currently underway with North Construction leading cladding remediation and replacement on the western grandstand, alongside general upgrades to improve the venue’s aesthetic and structural integrity. Earlier in 2025, urgent roof repairs were conducted on the same stand following storm damage, addressing weather-related wear and tear that had impacted the facility.

“The stadium is the heart of rugby league in Newcastle, and these upgrades ensure our fans have the best possible experience while we attract major events to the region,” Gardner said. “From the new playing surface that gives our players every chance to perform, to the HD screens that keep supporters connected to the action, every improvement is focused on making McDonald Jones Stadium a venue we can all be proud of.”

The works build on a long-term modernization plan that has already delivered significant improvements since 2019, with minor repairs from recent weather events also being addressed as part of the ongoing program. As the Knights continue their push for on-field success, the stadium upgrades provide a fitting backdrop for the club’s future and reinforce Newcastle’s status as a key sports and entertainment hub in New South Wales.
