RAIDERS CONGRATULATE AXEL WELLINGS ON NRL SCHOOL TO WORK AWARD

Canberra Raiders hail local Wiradjuri man named 2025 NRL School to Work Young Leader of the Year

The Canberra Raiders have extended warm congratulations to local NRL School to Work student Axel Wellings on being named the 2025 NRL School to Work Young Leader of the Year. The prestigious award recognises outstanding Indigenous youth who demonstrate exceptional leadership, meaningful community involvement, and strong academic or career potential.

Wellings, a proud Wiradjuri man from Goulburn, received the honour at the annual NRL School to Work Awards Night held on 28 November, marking a significant milestone in his journey as a young community leader.

During his time at Mulwaree High School, where he served as captain in 2024, Wellings led several initiatives designed to support Indigenous students, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for his peers. Since graduating, he has built on this foundation by taking on the role of an NRL Youth Ambassador, using his platform to connect with young people and encourage positive life choices.

His commitment to leadership and community has also seen him selected for the NSW Parliament Young Aboriginal Leaders Program, where he has developed valuable skills in policy, advocacy and governance. In addition, Wellings played a key role in establishing the Little Yarns reading program – an initiative that promotes literacy while celebrating Indigenous culture and pride among young children.

Reflecting on his achievement, Wellings said he hopes to inspire future generations to seize opportunities and embrace their cultural identity. “I want young people to know they can create their own path and be proud of who they are and where they come from,” he stated.

The Raiders have praised Wellings for his dedication to making a difference in his community, with club officials noting that his work embodies the values of respect, leadership and community that the organisation stands for. As a local success story, he serves as a powerful role model for Indigenous youth across the region and beyond.
