KELLY’S DOUBLE REVEAL: ESPN HONOUR AND MATERNITY BREAK SENDS RIPPLES ACROSS AUSTRALIA
Sydney Roosters superstar Isabelle Kelly has capped a historic year with an ESPN award, while stunning the rugby league world with news she will take time off early next year to welcome her first child with long-term partner Jake Callister.
The 29-year-old, one of the NRLW’s most decorated players, received the prestigious ESPN honour in a ceremony this week, recognising her extraordinary contribution to women’s sport both on and off the field. The award adds to a glittering 2024 season that saw her lead the Roosters to their second NRLW Premiership as captain – following their 2021 triumph – solidifying her legacy as a foundational figure in the competition since its 2018 launch.
But it was Kelly’s personal announcement that sent shockwaves across Australia’s sporting landscape. In an emotional speech after accepting the ESPN award, she revealed she and Callister – her partner of more than seven years – are expecting their first child, and she will step away from the game in early 2026 to focus on motherhood.
“I never imagined I’d be standing here with this award and sharing this news,” Kelly said, fighting back tears. “The Roosters and rugby league have given me everything, but this next chapter with Jake and our baby is something we’ve dreamed of for so long. I’m so grateful for the support of the club, my teammates and fans as I embark on this new journey.”
Kelly’s on-field achievements speak for themselves: she is a multiple Dally M Award winner, having claimed Centre of the Year three times and Captain of the Year in 2022, and was named the RLPA Players’ Champion in 2024 – a testament to the respect she commands from her peers. Internationally, she has been a mainstay of the Jillaroos since 2017, helping Australia lift the World Cup that year and captaining New South Wales to victory in the 2025 State of Origin series.
Roosters CEO Joe Kelly praised her as a “once-in-a-generation talent and leader”. “Isabelle has been the heart and soul of our women’s program,” he said. “While we’ll miss her on the field, we’re thrilled for her and Jake, and she’ll always have a home at the Roosters.”
Callister, who Kelly married in 2020, has been her biggest supporter throughout her career, often seen cheering from the sidelines. The couple have yet to reveal their baby’s due date but say they are “over the moon” about the new addition to their family.
