WELCOME BACK, MARK! O’CONNOR FIT AND READY AFTER INJURY SETBACK AHEAD OF NEW SEASON
Irish star returns to training fresh from Gaelic football glory after missing Geelong’s final 2025 games
GEELONG – In a huge boost for the Cats ahead of the 2026 AFL season, Irish defender Mark O’Connor has declared himself “fit and ready to go” as he returns to training – just months after being ruled out of the rest of 2025 following knee and wrist surgery.
The 27-year-old, who has established himself as one of Geelong’s most versatile and reliable players, suffered the serious injury setback late last year, forcing him to sit out the club’s final campaign games. But after successful procedures and a rigorous rehabilitation program, O’Connor is back on the track and raring to resume his AFL career.
“Welcome back, Mark!” the club announced on social media alongside footage of O’Connor joining his teammates for pre-season training. “It’s fantastic to have him out there with us again – his dedication through rehab has been incredible.”
Adding to the feel-good story, O’Connor returns fresh from a stellar off-season in Ireland, where he helped his home club Dingle claim both the Munster Club SFC Final and Kerry SFC Title – a remarkable double that highlights his enduring talent across both codes.
His achievements with Geelong are equally impressive: O’Connor was part of the Cats’ 2022 AFL Premiership winning side, becoming one of only a handful of Irishmen to lift the coveted trophy. He was elevated to the club’s leadership group in 2020 and has played over 100 games for Geelong, earning a reputation for his composure, game sense and ability to lock down key opponents in defense.
Speaking after his first training session back, O’Connor expressed his excitement to be back with the Cats. “The surgery and rehab were tough, but knowing I had the Gaelic football season to look forward to kept me motivated,” he said. “Winning those titles with Dingle was amazing, but now my focus is fully on Geelong and helping the team have a successful 2026.”
Geelong head coach Chris Scott praised O’Connor’s resilience and the value he brings to the side. “Mark is a crucial part of our setup – his experience, leadership and versatility make him indispensable,” Scott said. “To see him come back from serious injury and immediately win silverware at home shows the character he has. We’re thrilled to have him fit and ready for the new season.”
