STEWART IN THE ‘BIG V’: GEELONG VICE-CAPTAIN NAMED IN VICTORIA’S AFL ORIGIN SQUAD
Geelong Cats vice-captain Tom Stewart has received a dream call-up to represent Victoria in the upcoming AFL Origin series, with the premier defender set to pull on the iconic ‘Big V’ guernsey in a moment he has described as “a career highlight in the making.”
The announcement caps off another stellar period for Stewart, who has cemented his status as one of the modern game’s finest defenders with a string of individual and team achievements at Kardinia Park. His selection in the Victorian squad marks a significant milestone in his career, adding to an already impressive resume that places him among Geelong’s most decorated current players.
Stewart’s list of accomplishments at the Cats includes playing a pivotal role in the 2022 AFL premiership, earning five All-Australian selections across 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023 – a feat that highlights his consistent excellence at the highest level. He has also claimed two Carji Greeves Medals as the club’s best and fairest in 2021 and 2023, took home the 2018 AFLCA Young Player Award in his breakthrough season, and was named Geelong’s vice-captain in 2024, leading by example both on and off the field.
Speaking about his selection, Stewart could barely contain his excitement. “To wear the ‘Big V’ has been a goal of mine since I was a kid kicking the footy in the backyard,” he said. “Growing up watching the best players in Victoria represent our state, I never thought I’d get the chance to do the same. It’s a huge honour, and I can’t wait to run out there with the Big V on my chest.”
Geelong head coach Chris Scott praised Stewart’s well-deserved call-up, highlighting his impact on the game beyond just defensive duties. “Tom is more than just a great defender – he’s a playmaker who can turn a game with his vision and kicking,” Scott said. “Victoria is getting one of the most consistent and influential players in the AFL right now, and I have no doubt he’ll do the Big V proud. This is a fantastic recognition for all his hard work and dedication.”
The AFL Origin series, which has been revived after a long hiatus, will see Victoria take on South Australia in a blockbuster clash at the MCG later this month. Stewart’s inclusion adds further star power to a Victorian squad stacked with the league’s top talent, and his ability to read the play, win one-on-one contests and launch attacking moves from the backline will be a key asset for the Big V.
As he prepares to represent his state for the first time, Stewart remains focused on doing both Victoria and Geelong proud, with the Origin call-up serving as another testament to his standing as one of the AFL’s premier modern defenders.
