CATS STAR DEMPSEY FACES THREE MONTHS OUT AFTER ACL INJURY IN TRAINING

Geelong Cats have been dealt a devastating blow with rising star Ollie Dempsey suffering an ACL injury at training yesterday, ruling him out of action for three months as the club prepares for the 2026 AFL season.

The 21-year-old, who has emerged as one of the league’s most exciting young talents, went down during a routine training drill at GMHBA Stadium, with scans confirming the partial ACL tear that will sideline him until mid-season. The setback comes at a crucial time for the Cats, who were counting on Dempsey’s consistent output and dynamic play to drive their campaign after reaching the 2025 Finals.

Dempsey’s list of achievements at Geelong already ranks him among the club’s brightest prospects. In 2024, he claimed the AFL Rising Star Award – becoming the first Cat to do so since Joel Selwood – while also securing the club’s Best Young Player Award and earning selection in the AFLPA 22under22 team. His breakthrough year set the stage for a standout 2025 Finals series, where he kicked 7 goals and was named “Wingman of the Finals” despite Geelong’s loss in the preliminary final.

Renowned for his electrifying style, strong marking and ability to kick goals from the wing and half-forward, Dempsey has become an integral part of the Cats’ structure in just two seasons at the top level. His absence will force Geelong’s coaching staff to reshuffle their forward line and midfield rotations, with young players likely to be given opportunities to step up during his recovery.

Cats coach Chris Scott expressed his disappointment for the young star, while remaining optimistic about his return. “Ollie has worked so hard to become the player he is today, and this is obviously a tough blow for him and the club,” Scott said. “But we know he has the resilience and support network to come back stronger. Three months gives him time to recover properly and ensure he’s at his best when he returns to the field.”

Dempsey is set to undergo surgery early next week and will begin his rehabilitation program immediately. The club has confirmed he will remain an active part of the playing group throughout his recovery, with teammates rallying around the rising star as Geelong continues its pre-season preparations.
