Simonsson Set to Return to Raiders After Eels Exit

Parramatta, NSW – Former Canberra Raiders player Bailey Simonsson has officially confirmed his departure from the Parramatta Eels and is set to return to the nation’s capital. The move comes after reports of a fractured relationship with Eels coach Jason Ryles, stemming from Simonsson being repeatedly overlooked for a desired centre position.

Simonsson, who joined the Eels in 2022, reportedly made multiple requests for an early release from his contract after failing to secure the starting centre role he had hoped for. Sources close to the player suggest a breakdown in communication with Ryles led to increasing frustration and ultimately, the decision to seek a return to his former club.

“It’s disappointing to be leaving Parramatta,” Simonsson stated in a brief press release issued by his management. “I came here with high hopes, but things haven’t worked out as planned. I’m grateful for the opportunity I had, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my career.”

While Simonsson’s statement remained diplomatic, insiders suggest the situation was more complex. The utility back, known for his versatility and strong work ethic, believed he had the skillset to excel in the centre position. However, Ryles consistently opted for other players, leaving Simonsson feeling undervalued and underutilized.

The Raiders, meanwhile, have welcomed the return of Simonsson with open arms. Coach Ricky Stuart is understood to be a long-time admirer of the player and sees him as a valuable addition to the squad, capable of filling multiple positions in the backline.

“Bailey is a quality player and a great bloke,” Stuart said in a statement released by the Raiders. “He knows our system, he knows our culture, and we’re thrilled to have him back in Canberra. He’ll add depth and experience to our squad, and I’m confident he’ll make a positive contribution.”

Simonsson’s return to the Raiders provides him with a fresh start and an opportunity to reignite his career. It also addresses a need for the Raiders, who have been looking to bolster their outside backs.

For the Eels, Simonsson’s departure is another setback in what has been a turbulent period for the club. Questions will be asked about Ryles’ handling of the situation and his ability to manage player relationships. The Eels will now need to look to the market to find a replacement for Simonsson, further adding to the pressure on the coach and the team.

The move is expected to be finalized in the coming days, with Simonsson set to join the Raiders immediately. He will be available for selection for their upcoming clash, providing Stuart with an immediate boost to his squad.
