Cleary Set to Appoint Ben Harden as New Assistant Coach

Penrith Panthers are poised to welcome Ben Harden, their current NSW Cup coach, into the NRL coaching ranks for the upcoming season. Harden will join Ivan Cleary as an assistant coach, bringing fresh perspectives and reinforcing the team’s coaching structure.

According to Weekender columnist Peter Lang, Harden will step down from his coaching duties with the reserve-grade side to fill the vacancy left by Ben Gardiner in the NRL coach’s box. Gardiner is set to join the Perth Bears as an assistant coach under Mal Meninga for their inaugural season in 2027. Gardiner’s departure, announced earlier this year, has paved the way for Harden’s promotion.

This move is expected to provide Penrith with stability in their coaching ranks as they aim to surpass their Preliminary Final finish from this year in the 2026 season. Harden’s familiarity with the Panthers’ system and player development pathways is seen as a significant asset.

Harden has been instrumental in nurturing young talent within the NSW Cup team, and his transition to the NRL level is anticipated to bring a cohesive approach to player development across all grades. His expertise will complement the existing strengths of the coaching staff, enhancing their ability to identify and cultivate emerging stars.

Peter Wallace remains an integral part of Cleary’s coaching team, serving as the other assistant coach. With Wallace’s continued presence and Harden’s addition, the Panthers are fortifying their coaching lineup to support their ambitious goals for the upcoming seasons.

The Panthers are expected to announce a new NSW Cup coach shortly. Additionally, a new Jersey Flegg coach will likely be named, as current coach Jono Rolfe is anticipated to transition into another role within the Panthers’ pathways system for 2026. These changes reflect the club’s commitment to fostering talent from within and ensuring a robust development pipeline.
