Sheffield Wednesday Star Defends Danny Rohl Amid Rangers Speculation

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has passionately defended former manager Danny Rohl, who is currently a strong contender for the vacant Rangers job. Bannan’s comments come amidst scrutiny regarding Rohl’s experience, despite his impressive tenure at Hillsborough.

The backdrop to this situation is Sheffield Wednesday’s turbulent period, marked by multiple transfer embargoes and the looming threat of a points deduction. One of the few bright spots during this time was Rohl’s transformative leadership.

Rohl took over after a disastrous start under Xisco Munoz, where the Owls managed a mere two points from their initial ten games. Relegation seemed inevitable, given the squad’s circumstances and the overall club environment.

However, Rohl’s arrival in October sparked an incredible turnaround. He defied expectations, leading Sheffield Wednesday to a comfortable survival in the Championship. The subsequent season saw the Owls finish in 12th place with 58 points, a testament to Rohl’s tactical acumen and motivational skills.

Despite interest from wealthier clubs, Rohl remained at Sheffield Wednesday, partly due to a significant release clause in his contract. However, persistent issues led to his departure in the summer.

Now, with Rohl heavily linked to Rangers, Barry Bannan has stepped up to defend his former boss against critics questioning his suitability for such a high-profile role.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Bannan stated emphatically, “People seem to forget what he did here. He came into a team that was rock bottom, with no confidence, and he completely changed the mentality. He’s a brilliant coach, and his attention to detail is second to none.”

Bannan further added, “He’s young, he’s fresh, and he’s got a real hunger to succeed. I think he would be a great appointment for Rangers. People underestimate how good he is because of his age, but he’s got all the attributes to be a top manager.”

Bannan’s strong endorsement underscores the significant impact Rohl had at Sheffield Wednesday and serves as a reminder of his capabilities as he considers his next managerial move.
