Steven Fletcher Announces Retirement with Emotional Farewell

 

Sheffield, England – Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38. The Scottish international, who last played for Wrexham, helping them secure promotion to the Championship, shared an emotional message as he reflected on his illustrious career.

 

Fletcher spent four memorable years at Hillsborough from 2016 to 2020, making 136 appearances for the Owls and scoring 38 goals. His final season with Sheffield Wednesday, the 2019/20 campaign, saw him net 13 Championship goals in 27 games, solidifying his status as a fan favorite.

 

Throughout his senior career, Fletcher amassed a remarkable 749 club appearances, scoring 189 goals. In addition to his time at Sheffield Wednesday, he played for clubs such as Stoke City, Dundee United, and Wrexham.

 

Fletcher also represented Scotland with distinction, scoring ten goals in 33 appearances for his country. His contributions on the international stage further cemented his legacy as a respected and accomplished player.

 

In an emotional statement posted on his Instagram page, Fletcher announced his decision: “After a lot of thought, I feel the time is right to retire from football. It’s not an easy decision because this game has been my life since I was a boy, but I know in my heart it’s the right moment to close this chapter.”

 

He continued, “When I look back, I feel nothing but pride and gratitude. From starting out at Hibs to the journeys with Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, Dundee United and finishing at Wrexham every club has shaped me and given me memories I’ll never forget. I want to thank all the fans who supported me along the way your passion and backing meant the world.”

 

Fletcher concluded, “Pulling on the Scotland shirt was also one of the greatest honors of my career. To represent my country and share the pitch with so many talented lads is something I’ll always treasure. Those moments stay with you forever.”
