Travel Bug Bites: Souths’ Murray Hints at Rugby Switch for Global Adventures
Sydney, Australia – South Sydney Rabbitohs captain Cameron Murray has revealed a surprising motivation behind his potential code switch to rugby union: a desire for more travel. The revelation comes amid speculation about his future, adding to the recent blow the NRL suffered with Roosters star Mark Nawaqanitawase’s confirmed departure to the 15-man code.
Murray, currently contracted with the Rabbitohs until the end of the 2028 season, admitted he’s open to a return to rugby later in his career, citing the allure of international travel as a significant factor.
“Yeah, I could (switch codes),” Murray said on the Unscripted with Josh Mansour podcast. “I miss schoolboy rugby a little bit… but later on, I definitely would (consider a switch).”
The 27-year-old played inside centre for Newington College and was offered a Waratahs contract after high school. However, the Mascot Jets junior chose rugby league, signing with Souths and rising to captaincy. A code switch would likely rule him out of the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.
Murray emphasized he remains focused on achieving NRL glory, particularly a Grand Final victory, before seriously contemplating a change. “I’ve still got a lot that I want to achieve in the NRL,” he stated. “I’m still chasing a grand final, so that’s definitely on the list.”
This isn’t the first time Murray has been linked to rugby union. Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones reportedly targeted him during his tenure. Murray’s prowess as a middle forward is undeniable. His absence was keenly felt by the Rabbitohs after an achilles injury sidelined him in February, though he made a comeback in the final round.
While a switch isn’t imminent, Murray’s admission highlights the growing appeal of rugby union, particularly the opportunities for global travel and experiences it offers.
