Panthers’ Martin Faces Fine for Misconduct in Preliminary Final

Penrith Panthers forward Liam Martin has been slapped with a fine for contrary conduct following an incident in Sunday’s Preliminary Final clash against the Brisbane Broncos. The NRL Match Review Committee handed down a grade one charge for misconduct on Broncos playmaker Ezra Mam during the 55th minute of the intense match held at Suncorp Stadium.

While the charge carries a monetary penalty, Martin will be relieved to avoid suspension, allowing him to be available for selection in the upcoming Grand Final. The incident involving Martin and Mam occurred during a heated exchange as the Panthers were mounting a comeback against a determined Broncos side. Replays showed Martin making unnecessary contact with Mam after the Broncos halfback had released the ball.

The Match Review Committee deemed the contact to be contrary to the spirit of the game, warranting the misconduct charge. Despite the incident, Martin played a crucial role in the Panthers’ thrilling 13-12 victory, which secured their place in the Grand Final for the fourth consecutive year. The fiery forward ran for over 100 meters and made several important tackles, showcasing his value to the Panthers’ pack.

Martin has until midday on Tuesday to enter a plea. If he accepts the charge, he will be fined $1,800. However, if he chooses to contest the charge and is unsuccessful, the fine will increase to $2,500. The Panthers are yet to release a statement regarding the incident, but it is expected that they will support Martin in his decision on how to proceed.

The fine comes as a minor setback for the Panthers as they prepare for their Grand Final showdown. Coach Ivan Cleary will be hoping that Martin can put the incident behind him and focus on delivering another strong performance on the biggest stage.
