Everton Manager David Moyes Suspends James Garner Amidst Carabao Cup Fallout

Liverpool, England – September 25, 2025 – Everton FC manager David Moyes has today announced the suspension of midfielder James Garner following a subpar performance in their 2-0 Carabao Cup third-round defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The loss at Molineux has intensified scrutiny on the team, with Moyes taking swift action to address concerns over individual contributions.

Garner, who received a yellow card during the match, has been singled out for failing to meet the required standards, particularly concerning a misplaced pass that led to a dangerous Wolves counter-attack just before halftime. Despite Wolves failing to capitalize on the opportunity, the incident underscored Garner’s struggles on the night.

“James’s performance was simply not up to par,” Moyes stated during a press conference at Finch Farm. “We expect a higher level of execution and commitment from every player, and his display against Wolves fell short of those expectations. As a result, he will be suspended from first-team activities.”

The suspension comes as a surprise, given Garner’s previous contributions to the team. In the 2023/24 season, he emerged as a key midfielder, leading the team in Premier League starts and tackles won. His achievements include being a part of the England U21 squad that clinched the 2023 European Championships. He also marked significant milestones by scoring his first Everton goal in the EFL Cup and his first Premier League goal in October 2023.

Moyes acknowledged Garner’s past achievements but emphasized the need for consistent performance. “James has shown glimpses of his potential, and we recognize his previous contributions. However, football is a game of constant improvement, and we need players who can deliver consistently at the highest level. This suspension is a reminder that no one is exempt from accountability.”

The duration of Garner’s suspension remains unspecified, with the club indicating that it will be reviewed internally. This decision adds to the challenges facing Everton as they aim to recover from their cup exit and improve their position in the Premier League standings. The team will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their upcoming league fixture, with fans eager to see how they respond to this latest setback.
