Magpies Face Uncertainty as Elliott, Mihocek Consider Offers from Rival Clubs
Collingwood’s devastating end to the season may worsen as Jamie Elliott and Brody Mihocek weigh their AFL futures amid interest from rival clubs.
Elliott, who showcased his value with a remarkable preliminary final performance, is being courted by Gold Coast, while Mihocek, who played through a toe injury in Saturday’s loss to Brisbane, has drawn interest from Melbourne.
The Magpies have extended contract offers to both forwards, but their retention is uncertain.
Elliott was a standout in Saturday’s match, highlighted by his soaring third-quarter mark and game-high four goals. His stellar season earned him a spot in the initial All-Australian squad, with coach Craig McRae lauding his “enormous” performance against the Lions.
However, Elliott was also involved in a controversial moment late in the game. A potential mark close to goal was spoiled by Brandon Starcevich, with Collingwood fans incensed by the non-call for front-on contact.
McRae acknowledged the missed free kick but refrained from using it as an excuse for the loss, suggesting Brisbane would have likely won regardless. The game was further marred by an early calf injury to veteran Scott Pendlebury.
McRae expressed his “overwhelming disappointment” and emphasized the need for careful reflection. “I want to be very deliberate with what I say because it takes a long time to get back here. There are no guarantees that you do,” he said.
Looking ahead, McRae indicated the Magpies would be active in the trade period, aiming to enhance the team’s talent pool. He noted the success of last year’s recruits Dan Houston, Harry Perryman, and Tim Membrey, all of whom played against Brisbane.
“I’m not going to stand still, trying to get better,” McRae affirmed. “Last year I said it was players over draft picks — it won’t be that extreme this year, but there will be balance.”
He emphasized the club’s commitment to exploring opportunities to bring in high-caliber talent, ensuring the team’s continued improvement.
