Former Pacers Player Chuck Person Among Those Arrested in NCAA Fraud Scheme

Former Indiana Pacers player Chuck Person was among ten individuals arrested on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, as part of a sweeping federal investigation into corruption within college basketball. The arrests, announced by the FBI, exposed a scheme involving bribes paid to assistant coaches to influence the choices of college basketball players regarding agents and financial advisors.

Person, who served as an assistant coach at Auburn University, was charged with conspiracy to commit bribery. The indictment alleges that Person accepted bribes totaling tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for steering players towards specific agents and financial advisors once they turned professional. The scheme allegedly involved funneling money through intermediaries, disguising the payments to avoid detection.

Joining Person in the arrests were three other assistant basketball coaches: Emanuel Richardson (University of Arizona), Tony Bland (USC), and Lamont Evans (Oklahoma State). Also indicted were several managers, financial advisors, and the director of global sports marketing at Adidas. The charges against these individuals range from conspiracy to commit bribery to wire fraud and money laundering.

The investigation, dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues,” revealed a widespread pattern of corruption within college basketball, highlighting the influence of money and outside interests on the recruitment and development of young athletes. The FBI’s investigation uncovered evidence of years of illicit payments, showcasing the systemic nature of the problem.

The arrests sent shockwaves through the college basketball world, raising serious questions about the integrity of the sport and the ethical conduct of those involved in recruiting and player development. The case underscored the need for greater oversight and stricter regulations to prevent future instances of corruption. The indictment detailed how coaches leveraged their positions of trust to enrich themselves and others, betraying the principles of fair play and ethical conduct.

The investigation continues, with the potential for further arrests and indictments. The long-term impact of this scandal on college basketball remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly marks a significant turning point, forcing a critical examination of the sport’s governance and the need for systemic reform. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ethical challenges facing college athletics and the need for greater transparency and accountability.
