Hannah Hidalgo Dominates at AmeriCup, Cementing Elite Status for Team USA

Notre Dame star guard Hannah Hidalgo is making a significant impact on the international stage, showcasing her exceptional skills and solidifying her status as one of the nation’s elite players at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. Hidalgo’s performance has captivated fans and analysts alike, highlighting her prowess on both ends of the court.

Hidalgo’s all-around excellence has been on full display throughout the tournament. In a particularly impressive performance against Mexico, she tallied nine points, four assists, and an astounding five steals in less than 20 minutes of playing time. Her consistent contributions have resulted in impressive averages of 8.8 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.8 steals per game, showcasing her versatility and impact on the game.

Her defensive prowess has been a key factor in Team USA’s success, leading the team to a perfect 4-0 record in Group B. Social media has been abuzz with praise for Hidalgo’s tenacious defensive pressure, highlighting her ability to disrupt opposing offenses and create scoring opportunities for her teammates. This performance comes after a slight setback against Colombia, showcasing her resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity.

Hidalgo’s selection to Team USA followed a rigorous trial process in June, confirming her place among the nation’s top guards. This achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and exceptional talent. Her selection is not just a recognition of her current abilities but also a testament to her potential for future success on the international stage.

The 20-year-old South Bend native has already established herself as a dominant force in college basketball. Named both ACC Preseason Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year this past season, Hidalgo led the nation in steals as a freshman at Notre Dame, averaging an incredible 4.6 steals per game and accumulating a total of 160 steals throughout the 2023-24 season.

However, Hidalgo’s impact extends far beyond defense. Her offensive prowess is equally impressive, as demonstrated by her remarkable 790 points scored this season at Notre Dame (averaging 24.2 points per game). She also contributed significantly in assists and rebounds, showcasing her well-rounded game. Her accomplishments include multiple program records at Notre Dame, including single-season steals, steals per game, and the distinction of being the only player in program history to score over 600 points in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. Hidalgo’s performance at the AmeriCup is solidifying her reputation as a rising star in women’s basketball.
