Nebraska Cornhuskers Unveils Tom Osborne Statue, Celebrating Football Legend and National Hero
On June 19th, 2025, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln unveiled a magnificent statue honoring legendary football coach Tom Osborne, solidifying his legacy not only as a sporting icon but also as a national hero. The 5½-foot bronze statue, depicting Osborne in a dynamic pose poised to sprint onto the field, stands proudly at the newly renovated north entrance to Memorial Stadium.
The statue’s strategic placement ensures Osborne’s inspiring presence continues to motivate future generations of Cornhuskers. It serves as a focal point of the stadium’s revitalized entrance, welcoming fans and players alike. The unveiling marked the culmination of a 15-month, $225 million stadium renovation project, which included repainting end zones, widening concourses, and modernizing the scoreboard.
Phase II of the renovation, completed with the statue’s unveiling, introduced stunning glass-and-brick archways and significantly improved sightlines towards downtown Lincoln. Project architect Marcos Iverson described the newly designed entrance as “a cathedral porch for college football,” a fitting setting for the Osborne statue.
The statue itself is a masterpiece of detail, capturing Osborne’s likeness with remarkable accuracy. It is surrounded by native bluestem grass and granite pavers, each engraved with the years of his conference championships – a testament to his unparalleled success. The nighttime ambiance is equally impressive, with LED up-lighting bathing the bronze in warm amber, creating a striking visual against the crimson-lit “NEBRASKA” façade. This visually stunning setting has already become a popular subject on social media.
The renovation project, completed in phases, dramatically enhanced the fan experience. Beyond the aesthetic improvements, the project focused on improving accessibility and functionality, modernizing the stadium to meet the demands of contemporary college football. The modernized scoreboard provides enhanced viewing experiences, while the wider concourses improve fan flow and comfort.
Osborne’s statue stands as a symbol of the university’s commitment to honoring its history while embracing the future. It is a fitting tribute to a man who not only achieved remarkable success on the football field but also demonstrated unwavering integrity and leadership throughout his career. The statue serves as a constant reminder of Osborne’s enduring legacy and his lasting impact on the University of Nebraska and the world of college football. The statue’s unveiling was a momentous occasion, celebrated by fans, alumni, and the university community alike, marking a significant milestone in the history of Nebraska Cornhusker football.
