Indiana University Announces $698.4 Million Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Renovation

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Indiana University (IU) today announced a landmark $698.4 million renovation project for Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, the iconic home of the Indiana Hoosiers men’s and women’s basketball teams. This ambitious undertaking represents a significant investment in IU’s athletic infrastructure and promises to transform the Assembly Hall into a state-of-the-art facility for decades to come.

The Assembly Hall, opened in 1971, replaced the “New” IU Fieldhouse and has since become synonymous with Hoosiers basketball, hosting countless memorable games and creating a legacy of passionate fans and thrilling victories. This renovation project is designed to honor that legacy while simultaneously modernizing the arena to meet the demands of 21st-century collegiate athletics.

The comprehensive renovation will encompass a wide range of improvements, including:

– Enhanced Fan Experience: The project will focus on improving the overall fan experience through upgraded seating, improved sightlines, enhanced concessions, and modernized restrooms. A new sound system and high-definition video displays will create an immersive and engaging atmosphere.

– Improved Amenities: The renovation will include the addition of premium seating options, including luxury suites and club seating, to cater to a wider range of fans. Improved accessibility features will ensure inclusivity for all attendees.

– Technological Advancements: The Assembly Hall will receive a significant technology upgrade, including a new scoreboard, improved lighting, and advanced connectivity throughout the arena. This will enhance the fan experience and improve operational efficiency.

– Sustainability Initiatives: The renovation will incorporate sustainable design principles, minimizing environmental impact and maximizing energy efficiency. This commitment to sustainability aligns with IU’s broader environmental goals.

– Structural Improvements: The project will address necessary structural improvements to ensure the long-term viability and safety of the Assembly Hall. This includes upgrades to the building’s infrastructure and systems.

The renovation is expected to take several years to complete, with a phased approach to minimize disruption to the basketball season and other scheduled events. IU Athletics will work closely with event organizers and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition throughout the construction process.

“This transformative project represents a profound investment in Indiana University Athletics and the entire IU community,” said IU President Pamela Whitten. “The renovated Assembly Hall will not only provide our student-athletes with a world-class facility, but it will also enhance the game-day experience for our loyal fans and serve as a source of pride for the entire state of Indiana.”

The $698.4 million investment underscores IU’s commitment to providing its student-athletes with the best possible resources and facilities. The renovated Assembly Hall will stand as a testament to IU’s dedication to athletic excellence and its commitment to creating a vibrant and engaging campus environment. The project is anticipated to create numerous jobs and stimulate economic growth in the Bloomington community. The modernized Assembly Hall will continue to serve as a symbol of Hoosier pride and a premier venue for collegiate basketball for generations to come.
