Arizona State Coach Dillingham Apologizes for Criticism of Kicker Ian Hershey
TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University head football coach Kenny Dillingham issued a public apology on Monday for his harsh criticism of kicker Ian Hershey following the Sun Devils’ loss to the University of Cincinnati on Saturday. Dillingham acknowledged that his post-game comments were inappropriate and had a detrimental effect on the young kicker.
“I’ve never in my career done anything that’s had a negative effect on a kid,” Dillingham stated during a press conference. “And I’ve had some really bad seasons, some really bad pay. Absolutely failed him.” His remorseful tone marked a significant shift from his post-game remarks, which drew widespread criticism.
Hershey, a redshirt sophomore, missed two crucial field goals in the fourth quarter of the 24-14 defeat against Cincinnati. These misses, from 48 and 41 yards, proved pivotal in the Sun Devils’ loss. While Hershey’s overall field goal percentage for the season stands at 7 of 12, his performance from beyond 30 yards is a cause for concern, with only 3 successful kicks out of 8 attempts.
Following the game, Dillingham publicly labeled Arizona State’s kicking game “atrocious,” a statement that immediately sparked controversy. He further escalated the situation by inviting Arizona State students to email him regarding a tryout for the kicker position, stating his intention to find a replacement. “I’m dead serious,” Dillingham had declared. “… We got to find somebody who can make a field goal.”
Dillingham’s apology reflects a recognition of the impact his words had on Hershey’s confidence and morale. The coach’s initial reaction, while perhaps born out of frustration and a desire for improvement, was widely criticized for its lack of empathy and its potential to undermine the player’s self-esteem.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between holding players accountable and providing them with the necessary support and encouragement. Dillingham’s apology underscores his commitment to fostering a positive and supportive environment for his players, even amidst the pressures of competitive college football. The coach’s actions demonstrate a willingness to learn from his mistakes and prioritize the well-being of his athletes. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of mindful communication and leadership in coaching.
