Dawn Staley Reveals She Turned Down Alabama Coaching Job Before South Carolina Success

COLUMBIA, SC – In her newly released memoir, “Uncommon Favor,” South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley reveals a pivotal moment in her career: she turned down the head coaching position at the University of Alabama before ultimately leading the Gamecocks to unprecedented success. The revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into Staley’s decision-making process and the path that led her to become one of the most celebrated coaches in women’s college basketball.

Staley’s account details how Alabama approached her in 2005, while she was successfully coaching at Temple University. Despite the allure of coaching in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), a highly competitive league, Staley felt the Alabama opportunity wasn’t the right fit. “Alabama came after me first in 2005,” Staley wrote in her book. “I visited the campus. I liked the athletic director. But I couldn’t see myself living in Alabama.”

At the time, Staley’s Temple Owls were enjoying a remarkable season, achieving a perfect 16-0 regular season record, a feat that made them the first undefeated team in Atlantic 10 history. This success solidified her reputation as a highly skilled coach, making her a sought-after candidate for several prominent programs. However, Staley’s intuition guided her away from Alabama, a decision that would ultimately shape her future.

While Staley’s tenure at Temple was marked by six NCAA Tournament appearances, she recognized the need for a change of environment to achieve her ultimate goal: winning a national championship. This ambition led her to patiently wait for the right opportunity, an opportunity that eventually presented itself with the South Carolina job.

The South Carolina position, when it opened a few years later, resonated deeply with Staley. It presented a unique combination of factors that aligned perfectly with her aspirations and personal circumstances. The decision to join the Gamecocks proved to be a turning point in her career, leading to an era of unparalleled success, culminating in multiple national championships and solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest coaches in women’s basketball history. Staley’s story highlights the importance of intuition, patience, and the pursuit of the right opportunity in achieving one’s goals. Her decision to decline Alabama, while seemingly a setback, ultimately paved the way for her remarkable achievements at South Carolina.
