LSU Lands MiLaysia Fulwiley: A Quick Recruitment for a Proven Star

BATON ROUGE, LA – LSU women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey revealed details surrounding the remarkably swift recruitment of former South Carolina star MiLaysia Fulwiley, a rising junior who recently entered the transfer portal. In a Friday podcast appearance on Gordon McKernan’s show, Mulkey described the process as surprisingly efficient, requiring only a single conversation with Fulwiley and her mother before securing her commitment to the Tigers.

Remarkably, Fulwiley didn’t even visit the LSU campus before making her decision. Mulkey attributed this to Fulwiley’s familiarity with LSU’s style of play, gained through previous matchups against the Tigers. “She’s played against us enough to know our style of play,” Mulkey stated. The coach highlighted that prospective players thoroughly research programs, analyzing roster composition and potential playing time. Fulwiley, she indicated, had essentially made up her mind before the official conversation took place.

Mulkey emphasized the challenging, yet ultimately successful, nature of the recruitment process. “It was not an easy thing to sell, but you’re always nervous, and that’s what makes it not easy,” she explained. The coach also cited Fulwiley’s impressive past performances against LSU as a key element in their decision to pursue her.

During three previous games against the Tigers, Fulwiley averaged an impressive 13.3 points per game, shooting 45% from the field, and sinking six out of thirteen three-point attempts. Her defensive contributions were equally impactful, with six total steals. Her most dominant performance came in the 2024 SEC Tournament championship game, where she scored 24 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting from the field and a remarkable 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. “Every time we’ve played South Carolina,” Mulkey said, “she, in particular, has kicked our rear end.”

Fulwiley is one of three transfers joining LSU this offseason. While the Tigers pursued another top transfer, Serah Williams, she ultimately committed to UConn. Despite this, the acquisition of Fulwiley represents a significant boost to LSU’s roster, signaling a player with a proven track record and a clear understanding of the LSU program.
