Indiana Defensive Tackle Tyrique Tucker Ready to Lead Hoosiers’ Defense in 2025
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With the departure of starting defensive tackles James Carpenter and CJ West, Indiana’s defensive line is poised for a leadership change. Stepping up to the challenge is sophomore Tyrique Tucker, who is ready to seize the opportunity and set a high standard for the Hoosiers’ defense in 2025.
Tucker, a key contributor in 2024, played in all 13 games, accumulating 306 snaps – the third-most among Indiana’s defensive linemen. His impact was significant, recording three sacks and 21 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). Impressively, PFF ranked him as the sixth-best overall defender on the team, surpassing several starters.
This performance has instilled confidence in Tucker, who believes he is ready to not only start but also lead the Hoosiers’ defense. He credits Carpenter and West for mentoring him, emphasizing the importance of leading by example. Tucker aims to uphold the high standard set by his predecessors, carrying the torch for the team’s defensive line.
Tucker’s journey to Indiana is noteworthy. He transferred from James Madison University, following head coach Curt Cignetti. His performance at JMU, where he started five games, further demonstrates his capabilities. Often overlooked due to his height (6 feet), Tucker’s 298 pounds and impactful play have proven his worth. He has seamlessly integrated into defensive coordinator Bryant Haines’ scheme.
Tucker’s dedication extends beyond the regular season. He actively participates in “craft season,” a rigorous offseason training regimen he undertakes with edge rusher Mikail Kamara. This self-directed training program emphasizes perfecting their skills and maximizing their potential during the off-season.
The Hoosiers’ defensive line will see some new faces in 2025, alongside Tucker. Marcus Burris Jr. returns after playing 296 snaps in 2024, but the rest of the interior line will feature new players. Western Kentucky transfer Hosea Wheeler and Texas State transfer Dominique Ratcliff are expected to contribute, along with returning players Robby Harrison and J’Mari Monette. With Tucker’s leadership and the addition of talented transfers, the future of Indiana’s defensive line looks promising.
