Kim Caldwell Takes Two-Week Leave of Absence from Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Due to Family Issues

Tennessee Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell has announced that she will be taking a two-week leave of absence from the team, effective after NCAA tournament sweet 16, due to personal family matters.

“My family needs me right now, and I need to be there for them,” Caldwell said in a statement released by the university. “I appreciate the support of the athletic department, the players, and the fans during this time. I look forward to returning to the team soon.”

Caldwell, who has been at the helm of the Lady Vols program for three seasons, has guided the team to remarkable success, earning recognition as ESPN’s Coach of the Year this past season. While her departure comes at a crucial time for the team, as they prepare for the upcoming season, the university has expressed full support for Caldwell’s decision.

“We understand that family comes first, and we are fully supportive of Kim during this time,” said Tennessee Athletics Director Danny White. “We will continue to support the Lady Vols basketball program during Coach Caldwell’s absence, and we wish her and her family all the best.”

Assistant coach Jenna Burdette will assume head coaching duties in Caldwell’s absence, providing continuity and guidance for the team. The university is confident that the coaching staff, alongside the experienced players, will maintain a high level of training and preparation during Caldwell’s leave.

Caldwell’s absence is a reminder that, despite the demanding world of college athletics, family remains a top priority. Her decision to prioritize her family during this difficult time demonstrates the importance of maintaining a balance between personal life and professional commitments.

While the Lady Vols will miss their head coach, they will continue to strive for excellence on and off the court, knowing that they have Caldwell’s unwavering support and will welcome her back with open arms upon her return. The university will provide updates on Caldwell’s return date in due course.
