Report: Wisconsin’s Tyler Van Dyke will transfer. What his departure means for Badgers at QB

MADISON – It appears that Tyler Van Dyke won’t make his comeback from injury at Wisconsin.

The Badgers quarterback will enter the transfer portal, according to ESPN and 247sports. Next season will be Van Dyke’s sixth of college eligibility.

He missed the final nine games this season after suffering a torn right anterior cruciate ligament during the first quarter of the Alabama game Sept. 14.

The timing of the injury made his return for next season uncertain. With a nine- to 12-month return for the injury, Van Dyke would miss spring practice and perhaps some of fall camp.

Badgers coach Luke Fickell said last week that he planned to meet with Van Dyke last Wednesday and recognized the tough decision he had to make.

“There are a lot of unknowns,” Fickell said. “Tyler and I have visited and sat down during the bye week. We just don’t know. From what he’s told me, he wants to continue to play college football.

“It is a tough situation for him and all of us. There’s just so many unknowns with how his injury is, how long of recovery his injury is, but I do think that not knowing exactly where we are right now makes it pretty vague.”

Van Dyke completed 43 of 68 passes (63.2%) for 422 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. He’ll be one of the most experienced signal callers on the market as he was a three-year starter at Miami with career totals of 7,891 passing yards and 55 touchdowns.

“I love Tyler,” Fickell said. “Tyler has done nothing but be dedicated to what we’ve asked him to do. He’s been at every game.

“He’s been at every practice and that does mean something. We’re going to have to figure out where the progress is and the prognosis is for him because it’s a position and a situation where we can’t end up where we are this year.”

Van Dyke departure increases the likelihood of the Badgers will add a quarterback from the transfer portal.

Van Dyke’s injury left the Badgers thin in the quarterback room. Redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke took over the starting role and with true freshman Mabrey Mettauer serving as his back.

Another injury at the position would have elevated walk-on Milos Spasojevic to the role of top backup.

Fickell said he needs five quarterbacks on the roster. Without Van Dyke, he has four for 2025: Locke, Metteaur and incoming freshman Landyn Locke and Carter Smith. Both the newcomers plan to enroll early.

OLB Darryl Peterson announces return

Redshirt junior Darryl Peterson joined offensive linemen Riley Mahlman and Jake Renfro in declaring their plan to return to the Badgers next season. Peterson announced the news on social media.

“Finishing what I started! 1 Last Ride in Camp Randall. #OnWisconsin,” he wrote on X.

Peterson was a two-year starter who finished with 28 tackles, 12 solo. He has played in every game the past two season with 18 starts.
